Our story

Hand-churned, never machine-pressed

Shea nuts are gathered from the wild parklands of northern Ghana, roasted, pounded and churned with water until the butter rises. Our co-operative of women has made it this way for three generations — nothing refined, nothing added, ivory-gold and soft.

Good to know

How should I store it?

In a cool, dry place, away from direct sun. Kept cool it stays firm and lasts many months; a slightly warm room just softens it.

Does it have a smell?

A mild, earthy, nutty scent from the roasted nuts. There are no perfumes or additives — that is simply what honest shea smells like.

Who makes it?

Women's co-operatives around Tamale in northern Ghana, who gather the nuts, roast and churn the butter by hand. They are paid a fair, fixed price per kilo.

Can I cook with it?

Yes — the shea-kitchen jar is the same unrefined butter, good for baking and sauces where a nutty note suits. The beauty jars are the same product.

Is this the same as refined shea?

No. This is raw, unrefined butter: ivory to pale gold, with a gentle nutty smell. Refined shea is deodorised and bleached; we leave the butter as it is.

Why does my shea look grainy?

That is normal — raw shea turns slightly grainy as it cools after churning. It softens again in the warmth of your hand, and a gentle stir brings it back smooth.
